MakeThe only known clockmakers with a Foden surname were:

1 - Thomas working in Congleton 1753 - 1785 when he died suddenly while returning home from his mother's funeral. This was reported in the Chester Courant dated 6th December 1785 and his name was stated as Thomas Fodon, clockmaker.

2 - Thomas working in nearby Leek in mid 18th century and later in Congleton

3 - William working in Leek circa 1725 and then moved to Congleton

From this information this clock was either made by Thomas Foden or in conjunction with William (? his brother, father or some other relative). The alternative possibility is due to the fact that the maker's name is engraved as 'Foden' and not 'Thomas Foden'. When a single surname is used it is usually a sign that no single person made the clock and that it was a family team.

The hey day of single hand clocks was long past when this clock was made but some clockmakers were making single handers until 1800.

It is believed that descendants of the Foden family were the founders of the Foden lorry makers in nearby Sandbach of 'Foden' and ERF (Ernest Ronald Foden).
